Chichester is a city on the River Lavant in the county of West Sussex in England. With approximately 23,000 residents, it is about 54 miles or 87 kilometers southeast of London.
Chichester is home to the Chichester Cathedral, which has a shrine to Saint Richard of Chichester. Built in the 11th century, its spire eventually collapsed but was rebuilt in the 19th century.
The city's most famed cultural facility is the Chichester Festival Theatre, which attracts talent from the West End theatre in the summer months. Also popular is the Chichester Festivities, a three week long music and art festival held each year in July.
Chichester is also home to the Chichester Symphony Orchestra, which was founded in 1881.
